Training Syllabus, Alas de San Miguel/Solecito, Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Goals of the Solecito Program: Provide varying types of flight training, ie, Mountain Flying, Controlled Airport, cross-country training, and fulfill approximately half (10 hours) of the US FAA Private Pilot dual training requirements in a 3-4 day course. If preparing for an Instrument Rating you should be able to fulfill approximately half of the Instrument Rating training requirements, including instrument approaches. Conduct ground training in a relaxed setting with a minimum of distractions while allowing time to enjoy the beautiful Barra de Potosi area. Spouses are welcome or bring a friend!

Preparation/prerequisites: Study at least Chapters 1-3 of the Airplane Flying Handbook found at: https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/airplane_handbook/

and Chapters 4-8 of the Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge found at: https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/phak/

Cost: Approximately $3000 USD depending on flight time, a three-night stay and time of year (summers are cheaper!). An allowance of ten (10) hours of ground school is included.

Dual flight training is charged at $185 USD/hour and Ground School is charged at $48 USD/hour.

 

Day 1:

9:00 AM: Arrive Celaya Airport, Guanajuato (MMCY).

Pack airplane, conduct a thorough pre-flight inspection, review routing to Zihuatanejo (MMZH), and mountain-flying techniques.

11:00 AM: Depart for MMZH.

En-route discussion of flight and engine instruments, communications, emergency procedures, fuel-planning, diversions, and arrival procedures at MMZH.

12:45 PM: Arrive MMZH.

Unpack plane, conduct a de-brief of the flight, complete arrival paperwork, taxicab to Solecito.

1:30 PM: Check-in at Solecito.

De-brief flight over lunch, review schedule for next 3 days, and CFR Part 61 requirements for training. Discuss lesson plan for afternoon training.

3:00-5:30 PM: Free time/study time.

5:30 PM: Return to airport for additional flight training or meet for ground school.

De-brief after each flight training session and discuss preparation for the upcoming lesson.

Training Goals Day 1: 2-3 Hours Flight Training, 2-3 hours Ground School

Days 2 and 3:

8:00 AM: Breakfast at Solecito.

Discuss training activities planned for the day, review questions from study materials.

9:00-10:00 AM: Leave for MMZH airport for flight training.

Pre-flight airplane, take-off and leave the airport traffic pattern for the practice area, demonstrate and practice basic “pitch + power” techniques, configuration changes, control of the aircraft, and ground reference maneuvers. Conduct local training in the traffic pattern, demonstrate and practice several types of landings and take-offs, proper airspeed control.

3:30-5:30 PM: Free time/study time.

5:30 PM: Return to airport for additional flight training or meet for ground school.

De-brief after each flight training session and discuss preparation for the upcoming lesson.

Training Goals Days 2 & 3: 2-3 Hours Flight Training, 2-3 hours Ground School each day.

 

Day 4:

8:00 AM: Breakfast at Solecito.

Complete and review the flight planning for return to Celaya, Guanajuato: routing, weight and balance, fuel requirements, weather, and contingencies, and effects of density altitude. Review expected departure procedures for DGAC, Operations, SENEAM, and airport security at MMZH. Conduct additional ground training and review any questions about remaining requirements for dual instruction and preparation for the Knowledge (written) Test. Review and update logbooks.

12:00 AM: Depart for MMCY (or fuel stop in Morelia, MMMM).

If desired, conduct additional flight training in the Zihuatanejo area before returning to MMCY.

1:45 PM: Arrive MMCY (arrival time dependent on additional training enroute or stop in MMMM).

Unpack the aircraft, de-brief the return flight and discuss preparation and areas of study for next flights.

Training Goals Day 4: 2-3 Hours Flight Training, 2-3 hours Ground School.
